A Calling to Serve Christ and His Church Through Sacred Music
Position Summary
St. Helena’s Anglican Church seeks a devoted Director of Music Ministry to lead the congregation in the worship of Almighty God through the ministry of sacred music under our Parish Vision of “Raising up servant leaders and Gospel communities in Beaufort and beyond.” The person called to this position will play a vital role in sustaining and enriching the Anglican musical tradition, cultivating a community of singers and musicians, and supporting the liturgical life of the parish through thoughtful musical leadership and excellence. The Director of Music Ministry will work in close collaboration with the Artist in Residence (AIR), who currently provides leadership for our 9:15 am service.

St. Helena’s, founded in 1712 and located in the heart of Beaufort, South Carolina, is one of the historic jewels of the Anglican tradition in North America. While firmly rooted in our rich past, St. Helena’s is a vibrant, multi-generational parish committed to the faithful proclamation of the Gospel, the beauty of liturgical worship, and the formation of disciples who seek the renewal of our city and beyond. As a church grounded in the authority of Holy Scripture, shaped by the historic Book of Common Prayer, and nourished by the great Tradition of the Church, we aim to glorify God under the Vision.
Primary Responsibilities
Worship Leadership
- Provide musical leadership at our 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services, collaborating with the AIR, as well as serve on holy days and special liturgies throughout the Church year.
- Collaborate with the AIR so that there is a regular sharing of gifts between the services
- Offer Evensong on a seasonal or semiannual basis, consistent with the Anglican choral tradition.
- Provide organ and choral leadership for funerals, and other pastoral offices as needed. Also serve at weddings with additional compensation.
- Support midweek worship and other liturgical gatherings as appropriate.
Choral and Congregational Music Ministry
- Recruit, equip, and shepherd servant leaders in our choir of parishioners dedicated to the ministry of sacred song in all of its various expressions.
- Cultivate a prayerful and joyful community among musicians, both vocal and instrumental.
- Lead and support our children and youth choirs, equipping them to participate in worship in collaboration with the AIR. As youth choirs grow, the Director of Music Ministry would arrange for regular trips abroad as a capstone for the experience.
- Nurture the musical gifts of the parish for the edification of the body of Christ.
Musical Creativity and Outreach
In cooperation with the Artist in Residence…
- Compose, arrange, and adapt music appropriate for Anglican liturgy and congregational singing.
- Organize a regular concert series that celebrates the rich heritage of Anglican choral and organ music, featuring both parish musicians and guest artists.
- Serve as a musical ambassador for the church, forging connections within the local arts community and among fellow Anglican congregations.
- Connect with other worship leaders and artists at St. Helena’s to build a community of artists.
Qualifications
- A mature Christian faith and commitment to growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
- A deep love for the Anglican tradition and alignment with the theological and liturgical identity of St. Helena’s.
- Demonstrated excellence in playing the organ (experience on a pipe organ, pref.) and choral direction.
- Emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills, particularly in the formation of servant leaders.
- Familiarity with digital tools such as Planning Center Online and Google Workspace (ability to learn).
- Experience in planning music for the liturgical year and collaborating with clergy in the preparation of services within the full breadth of music offered in worship at St. Helena’s.
- Creativity, humility, and a servant’s heart.
Time Commitment
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be expected to adapt their schedule to meet the pastoral and liturgical needs of the parish.
Compensation and Reporting
- Salary: Commensurate with experience (starting at $70,000 plus benefits)
- Vacation: Two weeks plus a week of Continuing Education
- Status: Full-time
- Supervision: Reports to the Rector
- Start Date: Open; to be filled as soon as the Lord provides the right candidate
